How to prepare for your headshot session: A Basic Guide
Booking a professional headshot session is an investment - and a little preparation goes a long way toward making sure you get images you'll love. Here's everything you need to know before you walk into the studio.
One week before
Plan your wardrobe. Pull 3–5 outfit options and try them on in front of a mirror. Look for solid colors in blues, grays, burgundy, navy, forest green, or jewel tones. Avoid white (blows out on camera), black (can look flat), and busy patterns (distracting). Choose clothes that fit well and make you feel confident.
Get a haircut if needed — but not the day before. A trim 5–7 days out gives your hair time to settle naturally. If you color your hair, schedule your appointment at least a week in advance so roots have time to blend.
Skin prep. Stay hydrated, get good sleep, and keep up your regular skincare routine. This isn't the week to try a new product — stick with what you know works for you.
The day before
Lay out your outfits and accessories so nothing is forgotten
Steam or iron your clothing — wrinkles show on camera
Get a full night of rest (nothing shows under eyes like fatigue)
Avoid salty foods, alcohol, and anything that causes bloating
Moisturize your skin, especially if it tends to run dry
Morning of your session
Makeup (for those who wear it): Go slightly heavier than your everyday look — camera lenses and studio lighting can wash out features. Matte finishes work better than shimmer or gloss, which can catch light unexpectedly. Bring your makeup kit for any touchups during the session.
Hair: Style it as you normally would, but slightly more polished. Bring any tools or products you might need for adjustments on set.
Men: If you shave, do it the morning of. If you have facial hair, trim and groom it a day or two before so it looks intentional but not freshly done. Bring any products you use for your hair.
Arrive a few minutes early. Give yourself time to settle in, take a breath, and not feel rushed. The energy you bring into the session shows up in your photos.
